When you need an image converter
File formats cause small but annoying problems. A website won't accept your WebP file, an iPhone photo in HEIC won't open on a Windows PC, a logo needs to be PNG to keep its transparent background, or a page loads slowly because every image is a large PNG. An image converter solves these by changing the format without changing what the picture looks like.
This converter runs entirely in your browser. Your images are never uploaded, it's free, and there's no limit or sign-up.
Which format to use
- JPEG is the safest choice for photos. Almost every app, website and device can open it, and file sizes are reasonable.
- PNG keeps sharp edges and supports transparency, which makes it right for logos, icons, screenshots and cutouts.
- WebP is a modern web format that supports transparency and usually gives smaller files than JPEG or PNG at similar quality. Most current browsers support it.
- HEIC is the default photo format on iPhones. It saves space, but many apps and websites don't accept it, so converting to JPEG is the easiest fix.
Tips
- Keep transparency in mind. Background cutouts from Remove Background should stay PNG or WebP. Converting them to JPEG fills the transparent area.
- Convert, then compress. If you need a small file, convert to WebP or JPEG and then use Compress Image.
- Keep your originals. Every JPEG or WebP save throws away a little detail, so convert from the original file when you can.
Limitations
Converting changes the file format, not the picture itself, so it won't make a blurry photo sharp or a small image larger. For that, use Unblur Image or the Image Upscaler. HEIC files can only be opened in Safari, and transparent areas can't be kept when the output is JPEG.
