When to use it

Removing a background is usually the first step of something else: a product photo for an online store, a profile picture with a clean color behind it, a sticker, or a cutout for a slide or a thumbnail. The tool finds the main subject – a person, a product, a pet or an object – and makes everything else transparent.

Tips for a clean cutout

  • Use a photo where the subject stands out. Clear contrast between the subject and the background gives the cleanest edges.
  • Keep the whole subject in frame. Cropped hands or products cut off at the edge are kept as they are.
  • Check hair and fur at full size. If thin strands look patchy, run the same photo through the HD version.

Free version vs. HD version

The free version, coming soon, will run a compact model in your browser, so it will be private and have no limit. It is meant for products and people on simple backgrounds. The HD version, available now, runs a larger model on our servers and is better on busy backgrounds, hair, fur and semi-transparent objects. It costs 1 credit, and you can try it without an account.

Limitations

Very low-resolution images, subjects that blend into the background, and glass or smoke can produce soft or uneven edges. For those, the HD version gives the best result, and you can always fine-tune the cutout in your own editor afterwards.
