The China visa photo rules

Chinese embassies and visa application centers publish the same core rules for visa photos:

  • Size: 33 mm wide × 48 mm high, printed on photo paper, no border.
  • Head: 28–33 mm from the chin to the top of the head, with the top of the head 3–5 mm below the upper edge and at least 7 mm of space below the chin.
  • Ears: both ears visible.
  • Background: white or close to white.
  • Glasses: no thick or tinted frames.
  • Recent: taken within the last 6 months.

Where the published rules differ

Embassy pages don't always agree on head width: some list 15–22 mm, others 21–24 mm. The head height (28–33 mm) and the photo size are the same everywhere, and those are what the tool frames to. One visa center's English page lists the head height as "20mm to 33mm", which is a typo for 28 mm.
