How it works

  1. 1

Take the photo against a white wall

Canada doesn't accept altered digital photos, so we keep your own background. Stand in front of a plain white or light wall.

  2. 2

    Check the frame

We size your head to 31–36 mm on the 45 mm photo and check that the background looks plain and light.

  3. 3

    Download, upload or print

Get the 420 × 540 px file for online applications and 4×6 in and A4 sheets if you need prints.

Why people use it

Visitor visa rules, sourced

35 × 45 mm, head 31–36 mm from chin to crown, white or light background, from IRCC's visitor visa photo page.

No alterations

IRCC says digital photos must not be altered in any way, so we only crop and size your photo. No background replacement, no retouching.

Free check before you pay

See the framed photo and the checklist first. You only pay when you download.

Private by design

The preview runs in your browser. The photo is uploaded only when you export and deleted a day later.

Canada visa photo rules

IRCC's photo specifications for temporary resident (visitor) visas ask for:

  • Size: at least 35 mm × 45 mm.
  • Head: 31–36 mm from the chin to the crown of the head.
  • Background: plain white or light-colored, with no shadows.
  • Glasses: non-tinted prescription glasses are allowed if your eyes are clearly visible.
  • Recent: taken within the last 6 months.
  • Digital photos: must not be altered in any way.

Because of that last rule, the tool doesn't replace the background for Canadian photos. It crops and sizes the photo you took, and the photo check warns if the wall behind you looks dark or patchy.

Passports and PR cards are different

For a Canadian passport or permanent residence, IRCC requires photos taken in person by a commercial photographer, with the studio's name, address and the date on the back, and it rejects photos that have been cropped, edited or had their background changed. Those photos have to come from a photo studio. Visitor visas and similar applications that take a digital photo are what this page is for.
