How it works
Why people use it
The size on the official form
The MOFA application form asks for 45 mm × 35 mm. That is the size we make, not the 45 × 45 mm some sites claim.
Head size per the consulates
Japanese consulates ask for 32–36 mm from chin to top of head. The checklist shows your measurement before you pay.
Print sheets included
Six photos on a 4×6 in sheet and thirty on A4, with light cut lines.
Private by design
The preview runs in your browser. The photo is uploaded only when you export and deleted a day later.
Why Japan visa photo sizes look confusing
Search for the Japan visa photo size and you'll find 35 × 45 mm, 45 × 45 mm and 2 × 2 in, often on the same page. The source is the visa application form from Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, whose photo box reads 45 mm × 35 mm: 45 mm high and 35 mm wide. Most embassies and consulates follow it. The embassy in New Delhi and the consulate in Mumbai ask for 45 × 45 mm, and the consulates in the US also accept a 2 × 2 in US passport photo. This page makes the 45 × 35 mm version.
The rules we frame to
- Size: 45 mm high × 35 mm wide (413 × 531 px at 300 dpi).
- Head: 32–36 mm from the chin to the top of the head, about 71–80% of the photo height.
- Background: plain white, no shadows or patterns.
- Recency: taken within the last 6 months.
- Expression: neutral, facing the camera, eyes open. Edited or processed photos are not accepted.
Tips for a photo that passes
- Use soft, even light so there's no shadow behind your head or across your face.
- Look straight at the camera with your mouth closed.
- Remove hats, and keep your hair away from your eyes.
- Print the sheet at 100% size (no "fit to page") so each photo is exactly 35 × 45 mm.
